Movie Intro... Although this movie is based on true events related to the life of Kiranjit Ahluwalia and her children, the movie's focus is primarily on issues concerning the isolation, poverty, exposure to violence and constant abuse endured during her marriage. However issues related to masculine and feminine discourses are left behind, which is understandable, as the movie's format doesn't allow spaces to cover all these issues. That is the reason for this introduction to the movie. As an advocacy group, we want to call your attention to the subjects of masculine and feminine performance of gender. How these discourses of gender, of what it means to be a man and a woman perpetuates violence and discrimination of one gender and the supremacy of the other. Are these issues different to the ones that newcomer women and Canadian women face? And most importantly, how do we continue supporting advocacy women's groups to continue with their work in gender equality and the improvement of women's lives |
